Nexus provides several types of authenticators, such as RFID cards and key fobs, PKI cards, photo ID cards, one-time password (OTP) tokens, mobile IDs, and virtual smart cards on PCs. Features enabling visual identification and different kinds of digital and physical access are preferably combined in so-called multifunctional ID cards.

A multifunctional ID card (also called common access card, professional ID card or enterprise ID card) is a card that can be used for a wide range of applications, such as visual identification, computer and cloud service login, door and cabinet access, cafeteria payment, follow-me printing, digital signing, and book borrowing. To make this possible, the plastic card is fitted with features such as radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips, public key infrastructure (PKI) crypto chips, photo and visual security elements.

Other authenticators

If visual identification is not necessary, you can use other authenticators instead of multifunctional ID cards, such as mobile IDs, OTP authenticators, RFID cards and key fobs, and PKI cards. You can also combine the features of your choice on a card, such as an RFID chip and a PKI crypto chip.

If you want to use biometrics, you can fit your cards with fingerprint sensors.

One ID, several carriers

If you are using digital identities, it is a very good idea to have the user’s digital identity hosted on two or more different identity carriers, such as a PKI card, a virtual smart card on the user’s mobile phone, and a virtual smart card on the user’s PC. This enables use of the identity anywhere, anytime and from any device.

A card with a PKI crypto chip is a great starting point, since it is well-suited for securely activating new authenticators via a self-service portal.
