Fortum protects global critical infrastructure with unified access card management

Fortum, one of Europe’s cleanest energy producers, has centralized its physical access management using Nexus’ cloud-based card management service, GO Cards. This enables the secure design, issuance, distribution, and management of high-security access cards for employees and visitors worldwide across corporate offices and power stations.

Need for unified card management

Fortum has over 150 power plants and many offices in 11 countries. Previously, different sites used varying methods for physical access—key fobs at some locations, photoless access cards at others—making management fragmented and inefficient.

“We needed a uniform identity card for the entire group so that every employee could visually show that they work at Fortum,” says Tuomo Linjala, Group Security Manager at Fortum. “As a large group, with high standards of security and growth, we were prepared to take a holistic approach to physical security and chose Nexus as the supplier. With a global presence, we wanted to consolidate all the different physical security processes and adopt open protocols in our technology solutions. And since we had introduced a new corporate identity, it was time to replace the old logotype on all cards,” he adds.

Fortum's new access cards now feature the upgraded MIFARE DESFire secure encoding technology. The updated design includes a photo of the cardholder for easy visual inspection and identification. The same card is also used to enable follow-me printing, ensuring the confidentiality of the printed material.

Easy-to-use order portal and global delivery sealed the deal

The Nexus GO Cards portal has simplified and centralized Fortum’s card ordering process. Employees can request cards directly through the web portal, where user information is uploaded securely for card production. The portal also supports identity verification and image capturing.

Pre-configured visitor cards provide temporary access for guests across offices and power stations, streamlining visitor management. With a printer installed at their site, Fortum has the flexibility to print cards onsite or opt to receive ready-to-use cards printed and delivered by Nexus.

Security, quality, and price were crucial factors in Fortum's decision. “Nexus was able to meet all our requirements. Centralized and smooth management of all our sites, where administrators can access all facilities, but local card managers only have access to their facility. The service has a straightforward and smooth ordering process, where employees at our offices get an email to manage their photo through a self-service portal, “says Tuomo Linjala.
