Empowering Uganda’s national identity system with Nexus PKI

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) of Uganda embarked on a mission to enhance security, efficiency, and reliability of its identity verification system. To achieve this, they partnered with iFortify, a trusted provider of Nexus Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) solution in Uganda.

Enhancing security and compliance in national identity management

Under the Registration of Persons Act (ROPA) 2015, NIRA is responsible for managing the National Identification Register (NIR), verifying identities, and ensuring secure data access.

As digital identity services became increasingly crucial, NIRA aimed to ensure data integrity and authentication. They faced several challenges in achieving this goal, such as:

  • Establishing a trusted system for citizens to provide e-consent for eKYC services
  • Enabling third-party service providers to verify identities securely without compromising data integrity
  • Complying with global security standards while safeguarding personal data both at rest and in transit
  • Implementing strong authentication mechanisms to ensure non-repudiation in digital identity transactions
Securing Uganda’s digital identity ecosystem with Nexus PKI

NIRA selected Nexus’ advanced PKI solution to encrypt and authenticate identity data, enabling secure e-consent and seamless verification processes.

The Common Criteria EAL4+ certified platform, guarantees the highest security and reliability in compliance with global security standards. Nexus adherence to standards and regulations such as ISO 27001, eIDAS, and PSD2 successfully demonstrated its commitment to robust data security digital identity regulations.

Deployed for NIRA by iFortify, Nexus PKI has helped achieved enhanced service efficiency, improved compliance, and fortified data security.

Building digital trust

By implementing Nexus’ PKI solution, NIRA has significantly enhanced its identity authentication processes, reducing verification times and improving overall operational efficiency. This transformation has reinforced trust in Uganda’s national identity system and set a new benchmark for secure identity verification.

“IFortify’s expertise in delivering Nexus PKI has been instrumental in transforming NIRA’s digital identity services. Their secure, scalable solution has enhanced the trustworthiness of the eKYC verification processes,” says Patrick Okiring, Chief Executive Officer at iFortify, Nexus' trusted partner in the region.
