Nexus secures V2X communication in SECREDAS project
The Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership (ECSEL) SECREDAS project, launched in 2018, has been completed successfully.
The project which has funding of €50+ million is aimed at developing a reference architecture for secure and safe automated systems for automated driving compliant with the new GDPR Regulation. Watch this movie clip to learn more about SECREDAS: https://secredas.vercel.app/.
SECREDAS, standing for Product Security for Cross Domain Reliable Dependable Automated Systems, brought together a consortium with partners from 15 different countries, covering the whole automotive value chain (OEMs, TIER1’s, TIER2’s), key players in the medical area, a number of players in other transport domains (railways, aerospace) and key research institutes in order to tackle the objectives in a balanced way between generic common offerings and domain-specific solutions.
Nexus is proud to have contributed to the project in multiple ways. One of the main contributions is with regards to Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. A key component in automated driving is V2X technology – the communication between a vehicle and any entity that may affect, or may be affected by, the vehicle. The main motivations for V2X are road safety, traffic efficiency, and energy savings. V2X communication relies on a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to ensure that the integrity of each message and the authorization of its sender can be guaranteed while preserving privacy. The Nexus Certificate Manager provided the V2X PKI Certificate Authority in the SECREDAS project, in full compliance with the ETSI standards.
In addition, Nexus contributed to defining an architecture for secure communication between constrained IoT devices in the vehicle to the backend cloud server. This involved minimizing data payloads within the existing PKI certificate management standards and achieving end-to-end (e2e) encryption without an e2e Transport Layer Security (TLS) tunnel.
SECREDAS takes the first important step to developing and enhancing trustworthiness, particularly for the future European transportation and medical industries with the V2X communication SECREDAS. This helps to make connected and automated vehicles a reality and ensures that European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) remain competitive and can maintain their world-leading position.
