Nexus shows how to protect the internet of things (IoT) at Hannover Messe 2019

The internet of things (IoT) is growing very quickly, and protecting communications with and between the internet-connected smart things is crucial. “But there’s still a lack of understanding of how to build secure IoT applications. At Hannover Messe 2019, we show how to ensure mutual authentication, encryption, and data integrity,” says Thorsten Gahrmann, director of IoT sales at identity and security company Nexus Group.

The IoT is already connecting more than 20 billion devices, and it’s predicted to grow to 75 billion internet-connected things by 2025. One area that’s growing especially quickly is the industrial internet of things (IIoT), which is the use of IoT technologies to enhance manufacturing and industrial processes.

Trusted identities are paramount

“To enable protected communication in the IoT, all connected devices, services and people must have trusted and verifiable identities,” says Gahrmann.

The best available security technology for issuing and managing these identities is public key infrastructure (PKI). Nexus offers a PKI platform that’s flexible and scalable, and proven in many critical deployments.

“There’s a huge interest in our solution. One of the world’s largest automakers recently decided to invest in our PKI cloud platform to protect communications between all their internet-connected cars, for example,” says Gahrmann.

Nexus invests heavily in R&D

To accelerate testing and development, Nexus provides a sandbox environment. Nexus also takes part in IoT research projects such as ECSEL SECREDAS, SecureIoT, and CEBOT.

“We are investing heavily in research and development (R&D) to stay at the forefront – we understand IoT and its challenges, and we are driving the evolution when it comes to enabling 360° protected communication in the internet of things,” says Gahrmann.

Meet Nexus’s IoT experts April 1–5

The Nexus PKI platform provides cryptographically secure, unforgeable and theft-safe identities, based on PKI certificates. This enables strong authentication, encryption, and digital signatures. The PKI platform is part of the Nexus Smart ID solution, which consists of modules that help organizations digitize securely.

“It’s not enough to protect communications with and between the internet-connected smart things. You also need to manage the end users’ and administrators’ access to the IoT applications, and provide them with easy-to-use tools such as smartphone apps to log in. Our Smart ID solution can help you with all of this,” says Gahrmann.

April 1–5, you can meet Gahrmann and other Nexus IoT experts at the Hannover Messe 2019, in booth E46 in hall 6 in the Digital Factory.
