“Blockchain technology will make a real difference”
GET TO KNOW software developer Oleksandr “Sasha” Zeziulinskyi, who started working at identity and security company Nexus Group because the firm explores how to benefit from blockchain technology.
How do you think your colleagues would describe you?
“They would say that I’m creative. When I solve a problem I look at it from different angles. My colleagues would probably also say that I’m communicative. I like meeting new people, making friends and sharing ideas, knowledge and experiences with others,” says Sasha.
Why are you working at Nexus?
“I moved to Sweden from Ukraine two years ago to work at the bitcoin mining startup KnCMiner. After a month in Sweden I realized that I had no friends and nobody to speak with, so I started attending dance classes to socialize. There I met another Ukrainian guy who worked at Ericsson, and we became friends. After a while he introduced me to Roman Pasechnik, who had just come to Sweden from Ukraine to work at Nexus, and when KnCMiner declared bankruptcy I sent my CV to Nexus. I had offers from other companies too, but I choose Nexus because I can continue experimenting with blockchain technology here. I also like the Nexus culture, which allows employees to balance work and personal life.”
What are you working on now?
“I joined Nexus in July 2016, and right now my main task is to implement a mini driver for our Nexus Personal Desktop software, which is used for authentication and digital signing. The mini driver allows the user to communicate with smart cards in a modern, Windows native way, and it also enables nice Windows logon features. I’m also guiding a student who is doing his master’s thesis on how to use a blockchain to store time stamps in our Nexus Certificate Manager portfolio, which is used to issue and manage electronic identities.”
What will the future for blockchain look like?
“Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum are blockchain success stories, but there are more uses than cryptocurrencies. Lots of companies nowadays are experimenting with blockchain to solve problems in banking, trading, government, healthcare and even the military. However, it is important to note that the blockchain technology still is in the experimental stage. I don’t think blockchain will solve all the problems in the world, but I do think the technology will make a real difference for Nexus’s customers.”
Describe an ordinary day in the life of Sasha!
“My kid wakes me up between 5 AM and 7 AM, so I don’t need an alarm clock. I play with him in the morning, and hopefully I’ll have time for some breakfast too. Then I take the bus and the subway to work. Our development team always starts the day with a meeting called stand up, which is part of the Scrum methodology. During the meeting each of us talk about the problems we faced yesterday and our plans for the day. Then I work by myself in front of my computer for the rest of the work day, except when I have questions or problems I want to discuss with my teammates. On my lunch break I often go to the local gym, and after work I go home to spend time with my family. Sometimes I go out to play with my son, and later on we feed him and put him to bed. After that I have some time to myself, and I usually watch movies or TV shows on my iPad,” says Sasha.
